The Lemp Mansion, located in St. Louis, MO is in the top 10 Haunted Places in America and a common tourist attraction for St. Louis Haunted Houses. Reported suicides and early deaths plagued the Lemp Family and it's reported that to this day, the family ghosts haunt the mansion.
John Lemp immigrated from Germany to St. Louis in 1838. He earned his fortune as a grocer with a unique product that was not sold by any of his competitors - lager beer. He eventually gave up his grocer businesses and opened a brewery, which was very successful and John Lemp died a millionaire.
William Lemp followed in his father's footsteps and grew the Lemp Brewery into an industrial giant.
The Lemp Mansion was built in the early 1860's and was purchased by William Lemp for his family to live and to serve as an office to the brewery. This massive home had thirty-three rooms and was known as a Victorian showplace.
Death and tragedy seemed to plague the Lemp family. The first was the mysterious death of William Lemp's son Frederick in 1904. Three years later, William Lemp committed the first of 4 suicides in that house by shooting himself in the head.
William's youngest child and daughter Elsa Lemp Wright was the second suicide after she shot herself in the heart. Billy Lemp, after prohibition forced him to shut down the family brewery, Lemp Brewery, also shot himself in the heart. Charles Lemp was the fourth family member to commit suicide and the only one to leave a note.
After Charles' death in 1949, The Lemp Mansion was sold and turned into a boarding house and went through period of decline and decay over the next 10 years. After the house was purchased in 1975, it has been renovated and reopened to what it is today…the Lemp Mansion Restaurant and Inn.
Workers and visitors to the mansion have reported mysterious occurrences. Feelings of being watched, strange sounds, apparitions, objects moving on their own, candles lighting on their own, voices and even a piano playing by itself have all been experienced by those spending time in one of America's most haunted buildings.
In as recent as 2010 the mansion was the focus of paranormal investigation on the hit television series Ghost Hunters.
When contemplating the Lemp Mansion Haunted House there is a question to ask…Did the tragic deaths of the Lemp Family cause the haunting of the building as it is today or did the building drive the family members to take their own lives?
